DIRECT PROFESSIONAL ACCESS TO BARRISTERS IN CONSTRUCTION MATTERS

Since May 1990 many bodies and their members have been granted direct professional access (DPA) to members of the Bar of Ireland in non-contentious matters. The scheme does not extend to contentious matters (for example, court appearances) but only legal opinion. The scheme means members of approved professional bodies can instruct barristers directly.

Members of the following professional bodies in the construction sector are accredited to avail of the DPA scheme:

  • Association of Energy Engineers
  • Chartered Institute of Building [Fellows]
  • Institute of Geologists in Ireland
  • Institution of Engineers of Ireland [Fellows and Ordinary Members]
  • Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland [Members]
  • Society of Chartered Surveyors in the Republic of Ireland [Fellows and Professional Associates]
